Vector space

A vector space VV is a set containing elements called vectors, defined over a field KK, on which are defined two linear operations:

  • given v1,v2Vv_{1}, v_{2}\in V, there exists a sum v1+v2Vv_{1}+v_{2}\in V.
  • given vVv\in V and αK\alpha \in K, there exists a scalar multiplication αvV\alpha v\in V.

In physics, the field is almost always either R\mathbb{R} or C\mathbb{C}.
